TOEIC学習の肝とも言えるのが、言い換え（Paraphrasing）です。リスニング（Part3とPart4）で会話や話にある答えの根拠がそのまま選択肢に書かれているケースはまずない。言い換えられているケースが９９％と言っても過言ではないです。また、リーディング（Part7）でも問題文から答えの根拠は見つけても、選択肢にはその内容がParaphrasingになっていますので、答えの根拠と言い換えられている表現を正しく紐付ける力が必要です。
今回のブログでは、言い換えを４つの種別に分けて詳しく見てみます。
- 元の表現と似ている他の言葉を使う（Substitution）
- 元の表現を一般化する（Abstraction）
- 元の表現をサマリーする（Summarization）
- 元の表現から推測する（Suggestion）
他の言葉を使う場合
The annual agricultural trade show will be held.
この表現を、An agricultural trade show is held once a year.に言い換えられます。
一般化する場合
Bus and subway information is available on the city's Web site.
この文章を、Public transportation information is available on the city's web site.のように、Bus and subwayをPublic Transportationに一般化してます。
「The accounting staff」を「Employees」に言い換えるのもこのカテゴリに入ります。
サマリーする場合
Miller's Catering and Brilliant Meals are the most famous catering companies in town, but only Brilliant Meals has vegetarian options.
上記の文を、Miller's Catering does not have vegetarian options.にまとめられます。
The downtown library opens at 9:00 A.M. and closes at 10:00 P.M. from Monday to Friday. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, however, it opens at 11:00 A.M. and closes at 7:00 P.M.
長い文章ですが、The downtown library is open to the public every day throughout the year.にサマリーすることが出来ます。
新しい事実を推測する場合
The office will be closed for a month while it is being renovated.
この文章から推測できることは、The renovation of the office will take around a month to finish.元の表現には工事の工期は書いてないですが、文の内容から推測することが出来ます。
Many hotels try to make themselves stand out with a theme, and the newly opened BnB (Book & Bed) is no exception. Stocked with over 3,000 novels, BnB caters to those who enjoy literature.
BnBがどんな事業を営んでいるか直接は書いてないですが、文章から次のようなことが推測できるかと思います。The BnB is a hotel targeting a specific market.
